Turnbull Government Supports Girls in Sport: Minister for Women the Hon. Michaelia Cash and Federal Member for Chisholm Julia Banks MP host Forum in association with the Box Hill Hawks Victorian Women’s Football League team

Ms Julia Banks MP, Federal Member for Chisholm, was today joined by Federal Minister for Women the Hon. Michaelia Cash to demonstrate the Turnbull Government’s support of girls in sport.

Ms Banks, in association with the Box Hill Hawks Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) team, hosted a forum focusing on women’s leadership in sport to launch her community petition – a campaign which builds on the Turnbull Governments support for participation in girls sport.
The petition is aimed at specifically targeting local support in Chisholm to encourage and continue the growth of girls sport.
Ms Banks discussed how providing equal opportunity for women’s participation in sport starts at the grass roots level in local clubs.
“Learnings and experience which come from sport participation include the Australian values of teamwork, mateship and respect, and often translates into their leadership attributes and experience in other spheres such as business and community life” Ms Banks said.

Minister Cash spoke of her own experiences playing sport and how Australian sportswomen show young Australian girls what can be achieved through hard work and determination and how they are giving our next generation of women the confidence to be successful in any arena they choose.
At present, the Turnbull Government supports women in sport through a number of initiatives that provides opportunity for greater development. The Girls Make Your Move campaign encourages girls 11-19 years old to get active in different forms including organised sport. The Women Leaders in Sport (WLiS) program is jointly funded by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and the Australian Government’s Office for Women and provides women with opportunism to undertake training to reach their leadership potential within the sporting industry.
Ms Banks encouraged Chisholm sporting clubs and teams to sign the petition. The petition is available online at: http://backgirlssport.com.au/ and hard copies have been forwarded to local clubs for distribution.
