Julia Banks is the Federal Member for Chisholm in the Australian House of Representatives. Julia is a member of the Liberal Party of Australia, and won the seat in the Federal Election held in July 2016. Julia is also a member of the House of Representatives Standing Committees for Economics and the House of Representatives Standing Committee for Social Policy and Legal Affairs.
Born, raised and educated in Melbourne Australia, Julia graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degree from Monash University.
Prior to entering Parliament, Julia has worked in the business and corporate world for over 25 years beginning her career as a lawyer in private legal practice. Her extensive business and leadership experience includes various Executive Director and General Counsel roles in Legal, Corporate Affairs and Media, Compliance and Governance and Risk and Crises Management.
Throughout her career Julia has been strongly involved in supporting community work for a number of charities and not for profit organisations.
Julia’s parents are both of Greek heritage – her father migrated to Australia as a 15-year-old boy. Her parents always led by example, instilling the importance of hard work, family, community and education.
Julia and her husband Mike have raised two children, now both young students attending university in Melbourne. In her spare time, Julia loves reading and going on long walks and her favourite pastime is cooking for family and friends.
A working mum for over 25 years, Julia has experienced first-hand the challenges of balancing home, children, work and community life. Her experience drives her to provide ongoing support and mentoring for women and for people from culturally diverse backgrounds and gives her an understanding of the issues that directly impact the wider community of Chisholm in their day to day lives.
